83-YEAR-OLD FORMER SA SCHOOL TEACHER WANTED IN THE UK BACK IN WYNBERG MAGISTRATE COURT FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE

*Mr. W, a former South African school teacher accused of sexually and physically abusing boys during his career as an educator at various schools in South Africa and Scotland will reappear at the Wynberg Magistrate Court (2nd floor) on Thursday, 13 April at 08h00.

Mr W was arrested in South Africa in January this year due to various abuse charges laid against him by *Stephen – a former learner at Rondebosch Boys Preparatory School. Tomorrow will be the accused’s second appearance in court and we believe the state is ready to proceed with trial.

The former maths teacher and rugby coach is also wanted in the UK for his crimes against dozens of boys (about 50 charges), and is currently fighting extradition in a high-profile case against him in Scotland.

The accused was previously referred to by the pseudonym, “Edgar” in the press due to the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry banning the naming of individuals accused of a crime that they have not yet been found guilty of. But, that ruling was recently overturned and the outcome gave the media permission (with immediate effect) to disclose and/or publish inquiry evidence that identifies Mr W in Scotland.

Mr W taught at Fettes College and Edinburgh Academy in the UK during the late 1960s and 1970s. At least 40 men have come forward in the UK thus far. He also taught at Rondebosch Boys Prep in the Western Cape. Only a couple of South Africans have come forward to date. We believe that there are many more victims, and we strongly encourage them to come forward.

WMACA is angry and frustrated that he was arrested in 2019 but has been allowed to await the extradition outcome at home in South Africa, rather than in prison where he belongs. While his extradition from South Africa to the UK is still pending, he walks free.
